The plantation was established in 1735, and its main house exhibits one of the earliest known examples in the United States of a temple front in domestic architecture. Hampton Plantation State Historic Site is tucked away among live oaks and magnolias about an hour from downtown Charleston. Most of the plantation land is no longer in use and has reverted to natural wooded and swampy conditions.

The plantation now serves as an interpretive site for the system of slavery and rice cultivation in the region from the colonial period through the end of the Civil War. He married Margaret Wade on 01 Jan 1712. According to a 1712 land record his father gave him the Hempfield land. later he moved to Essex County, Virginia and lived there until 1736. John Hampton (son of Thomas, William) purchased, 3 Mar 1674/5, from Richard Cary 196 ¾ acres in Gloucester County adjoining his father's plantation. He married (1) Mary Mann.

John Hampton was spoken of as the eldest son of Rev. Thomas Hampton. In June 1677 he married Mary Mann, the neice of John Mann, Gentleman of "Timberneck plantation." John Mann was one of the wealthest men of his day in Virginia.
